DARK PASSAGE
With a rather
ludicrous premise and more plot holes than Sonny Corleone at a
tollbooth, DARK PASSAGE is nevertheless loads of fun. The first
half of the film makes great use of the first-person, subjective-camera
gimmick (with Lauren Bacall looking seductively into the viewer's eyes,
how could it miss?), and Bogey and Bacall manage to establish their
usual steamy chemistry throughout, even though we don't see Bogart's
face until the film is half over. It's a picture where you just
go along for the ride, not asking too many questions about the logic of
it all, enjoying Bogey and Baby, the great San Francisco scenery and,
especially, Agnes Moorehead's over-the-top Queen Bee performance.
